Shanty Jack

"SHANTY JACK" was born as Pete Hayselden (quite a few years ago) and was brought up in the industrial town of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, quite a distance from the sea. Many of his summer holidays as a small boy were spent with relatives in the East Coast fishing port of Grimsby and he was fascinated by the trawlers, tugs and merchant ships he saw during his frequent visits to the docks.

After leaving school he pursued a somewhat chequered career ranging from banking and insurance to the motor trade and engineering, most of these jobs lasting not more than a couple of years. In 1974 a chance visit to his old East Coast childhood haunts led to his finding a "snug berth" on a Tugboat, based at Immingham on the river Humber. After more than 30 years he has left the Tugboats and has more time for "Shantying".

He also has a strong interest in Yacht sailing and has a transatlantic crossing to his credit. His current sailing project is the restoration of a 110 years old Tjalk (Dutch Barge) in The Netherlands to take shows to waterside venues throughout the UK and Europe.

Folk music and song provided the foundation upon which his interest in the music and songs of the sea developed. The hobby has now grown into a busy semi-profession, with performances throughout the U.K. & Europe and the occasional visit to the U.S.A. In addition to deep-sea Shanties and sailors' songs he has a repertoire of songs from the traditions of the barges and fishing smacks of the east coast of the U.K. and lots of tunes on the melodeon collected from here, there and everywhere.

In addition to the usual range of performances for festivals and clubs he can offer "Shanty Workshops" and programmes tailored to School requirements. By special arrangement performances can be arranged with Liverpool shanty group "Stormalong John" who are featured on the C.D. "Maiden Voyage".

A few years ago he formed the trio "MONKEY'S ORPHAN" with Paul Gough and Robin Garside to develop a three-part harmony presentation of some of the maritime songs and to throw in a few instrumental arrangements on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, melodeon, bones etc. for good measure.

The experience gained and contacts made as a performer were put to good use in September 1990 when he played a major part in the organisation of the first "SEA FEVER" international Sea Shanty Festival in the port of Hull. "Sea Fever", now regarded as one of that City's flagship events, has gained an enviable reputation both in the U.K. and abroad and last year celebrated its' seventeenth anniversary.

At the present time "Shanty Jack" is planning a recording of Fishing and other songs from the East Coast of the U.K. and another recording of Sea Songs and Shanties with “Monkey’s Orphan”.

RECORDINGS:
C.D. "MAIDEN VOYAGE". Traditional style Shanties and Sea Songs. Recorded in Liverpool with choruses very ably supplied by the well - known Liverpool Shanty group "Stormalong John".

C.D.s "SAILORS' SONG" & “MORE MONKEY BUSINESS” Recorded with "MONKEY'S ORPHAN"

“SHANTY JACK” is also a guest performer on 3 CDs: "IN THE SHADOW OF THE MAINSAIL", "I THOUGHT I HEARD THE OLD MAN SAY" and “HEAVING LINE” recorded in the Netherlands by Compagniezangers from Medemblik.

The New Scorpion Band

The New Scorpion Band is a professional acoustic group performing traditional music from Britain and Ireland , with an extensive repertoire including "theme" programmes of poetry, prose and music (a concert will typically include 25 instruments and 5 voices).

The band-members are all distinguished performers in their own fields.

A typical New Scorpion Band concert contains an entertaining mix of traditional songs and ballads about love, the sea, work and war, interspersed with lively jigs, polkas, hornpipes, reels and marches. Often the songs are sung in harmony with accompaniment on a wide variety of unusual instruments, including strings (plucked and bowed), wood and brasswind, "free" reed, and percussion (a concert will typically contain twenty five instruments and five voices).

The introductions place the songs and tunes in their historical context in an informative and humorous manner, and the whole audience is strongly encouraged to join in with the chorus.

The New Scorpion Band enjoys working in schools and colleges. The band is happy to devise programmes suitable for all Key Stages and particular scenarios on any subject of "folk" life. (Industrial, agricultural, etc).

La Moresca antica
early italian music from a seafaring tradition

La Moresca antica is an italian music band based in Milano. It was created in 1989 by Umberto Mosca and Angelo Maffezzoli with the aim of exploring and performing Italian Renaissance music inspired by folk tradition and actual folk music originating from Renaissance.

In 1999 the band became, almost by chance, interested in the rich repertoire of Italian shanties and maritime music, which is, not surprisingly, very rich as it is. Surprisingly, it is almost unknown and totally unperformed by Italian folk musicians. As a result of the band’s interest in this field, they recorded “Marinaresca. Early Italian music from seafaring tradition” in 2002, which was the first CD ever recorded in Italy of maritime music. The CD was quite successful and the band fell in love with this kind of music. So they decided to go on exploring this vast repertoire, working both on written, even unpublished documents dating as far as 12th century as well as original recordings by ethnomusicologists. As a result of this further research the band published their second CD in 2004 on maritime Italian music, “Li turchi alla marina” (“The turks are coming to the shore”) in which they perform more shanties (including a 15th century shanty…) and beautiful sea songs from the Italian tradition, some of them referring to the time of arab pirates’ raids on Italian shores.

La Moresca antica have been touring extensively all around Italy, Europe and Japan.

The actual line up includes:
Roberta Maioli, vocals,
Marco Macchi, vocals and percussions
Sabina Colonna Preti, viola da gamba, vocals
Consuelo De Cea, viola da gamba
Angelo Maffezzoli, recorders, baroque and Reanaissance flutes, shawms, krumhorns and vocals
Umberto Mosca, vocals, colascione, baroque guitar, bouzouki, recorders, krumhorns, bagpipes, percussions, dulcimer.

Johnny Collins & Jim Mageean

Johnny Collins & Jim Mageean have cheered up the opening of the Strontrace for the past 26 years with their powerful duets and inspiring chorus songs. They have been the backbone of the annual song festival since its origin. The two British singers joined up as a duo in 1975 and have been performing at maritime festivals all over the world. They always manage to surprise their audience with new songs and they challenge the Frisian audience with fresh choruses.

Their first experience as a duo was at the start of the Strontrace in 1980 which was held at the occasion of the third Frisian Tsjoch Festival (its 29th anniversary is held on 16 th September). They were instantly enchanted with the audience and haven’t missed a Tsjoch Festival since. Johnny and Jim perform together as well as solo or with other musicians. Jim sings with The Keelers, a shany group dat frequented the Shanty Festival Workum in the 1990s. Johnny travels around the planet as solo shanty singer. Since 1960 he has been a frequent guest at folk festivals in his native country where he is famous for his shanties and traditional songs, accompanying himself on the guitar.

Their close link with the Shanty Festival Workum has been established on two CDs: ‘Strontrace’ and ‘Coming of Age’, both recorded live during the Workum Shanty Festival. Johnny Collins & Jim Mageean are highly appreciated performers and experts in historical facts and usage of shanties.
